Warwickshire Challenge #2 prologue

Five years had past since they had moved to this new land and settled in the plains near the flowing river. He worked with his people to build up homes and create a strong community. Times weren’t as easy as they were in Vanguard but every man was valued and felt apart of making the kingdom prosper. They dealt with many set backs and because of this a few had died along the way. There medical care was lacking and the land was rough in the beginning.

During those five years king Richard was not in a hurry to sire a son. He was still young and there was much to do. He gave the task of arranging marriages to his wife since most of those who came with them were of the age to marry and start their family. She was honored with the role and everyone was pleased with her judgement. She became close with the women and started a convent choosing to give a maiden named Tessamir who was the midwife sole charge of it.

The king had freed the serfs like promised to become peasants. However, their children would have to work the land for him until they amassed a certain wealth before they could become peasants like their parents. The people were confident that in a generation their family would rise higher in stature because there were many titles to be filled. They were still assured that they made a good decision to follow their new king to this land.

King Richard had made a promise to himself when he was a boy that he would cherish his wife and never cause the strife a courtesan did. He loved his mother very much but he had seen the conflict it caused with his father’s family. He had not spent as much time as he wished to with his beautiful wife but she was understanding since she had her own work to do. He always put the guilt aside with an excuse that she was the only one who had her family here with her. They would provide her what she needed.

His friends, Victar the Duke and Larson the Knight stood beside him through the years. The knight was the voice for the serfs and peasants while the Duke was tasked on overseeing the growth of the economy while the king made counsel with the builders.

He had become close with his wife’s father and son for they ran the only trade shop in town. They would buy fish and produce from the farmers to trade for goods or sell using the kingdom’s currency named gilt. The convent traded fish for ready made meals that they would then sell. They had made a great business and were the first to be very well off. Unfortunately, a disease had swept the family in the fifth year and his wife’s father and mother had died.  Her brother took over the family business.  From that point on he vowed to be there for her and made a strict policy that he was home every night to comfort her.

The king had put a tax in place to gain the needed gilt to make homes, community buildings and in the future the royal castle. He would not allow the royal castle to be built until every man, woman and child had a roof over their head. When the time came he had enough gilt and persuasion to have the castle built it took one whole year and they moved in on the 5th anniversary of the kingdom.

This is where it begins. 5 years from the day when they reached the land where they created a small kingdom in the farther region away from the boundaries of Vanguard kingdom. The city these settlers left behind for adventure and a better future ahead. All hail King Richard and Rocheshire kingdom.
